Referrals to the National Rehabilitation Centre can only be made by a medical professional from inpatient hospitals in the East Midlands. Eligibility criteria are listed below.

The NRC will primarily accept the following patient referrals:
The NRC is not able to accept the following referrals: referrals from the community/outpatients, paediatric patients under the age of 16, patients suitable for existing established rehabilitation pathways e.g. existing neuro rehab providers, NOF pathway or stroke pathway.
The aim is to offer rehabilitation to a wider group of patients than previously possible. Our senior clinician team reviews all patients referred and assess for admission. If patients are not admitted to the NRC then alternative pathways will be recommended by the team.
The NRC has a 24-hour rehabilitation approach. This means that every moment of the patient's day includes rehabilitation opportunities, and the NRC provides an environment where patients are encouraged to be as independent as possible.
Rehabilitation sessions include therapeutic rehab (with a therapist such as a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychotherapist, speech and language therapist etc) and pastoral classes (group activities such as gardening). Specific sessions are timetabled with the patients so that they own their rehabilitation journey.
In addition, the design of the building, the use of new rehabilitation technologies, and a new workforce model all support the ambition of an intensive rehabilitation.
The majority of our patients are referred from the East Midlands as the NRC programme is developing a new regional model for rehabilitation. The ambition, once the NRC is established, is to roll out this model across the country.
The 'national' element relates to the key focusses of the NRC – clinical excellence, education, research and innovation.
The NRC is a predominately NHS facility. There may be some private spot purchasing available in the future, but this is not currently in place.
The Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate, including both the Defence Military Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) and the NRC, are active clinical facilities and are not open to the public.

Our rehabilitation teams host a range of undergraduate and postgraduate clinical placements, which are arranged directly with universities and are typically allocated up to 12 months in advance.
