Rehabilitation training and development opportunities at the NRC includes apprenticeships, rotations, placements, fellowships and clinical/academic career pathways for a wide range of professions.
The aim is not only to bring new people into rehabilitation as a career, but also to broaden the types of roles engaged with healthcare.
In the future, the NRC will offer a range of different apprenticeships from clinical placements for medical and other healthcare professionals, as well as opportunities for other professions and backgrounds such as engineering and digital. Adding a variety of professionals to the NRC workforce will support clinical teams and provide an innovative, evidence-based environment and, in turn, the best possible experience and outcomes for our patients.
“The NRC, in partnership with Birmingham City University, has launched a bespoke apprenticeship course which aims to change the future of rehabilitation training in the country.
The Rehabilitation Assistant Practitioner Apprenticeship course is the first of its kind and combines academic lectures delivered by the university with on the job training at the NRC or within Therapy teams at Nottingham University Hospitals in order to develop a wide variety of skills.
On completing the two-year apprenticeship, which the NRC commissioned Birmingham City University to create, students will leave with the skills they need to work as an Assistant Practitioner (AP) at the state-of-the-art National Rehabilitation Centre and other healthcare rehabilitation settings.
The role of the Rehab AP was devised to support and enable the NRC to provide an intensive level of rehabilitation, to improve patient outcomes and in-line with international best practice.
The second cohort of apprentices began in September 2024, and future cohorts will be advertised through our website. These apprentices will also get to train at the NRC when it opens in 2026.

The University of Nottingham, in collaboration with Nottingham University Hospitals, offers an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) Degree Apprenticeship course.
The ACP apprenticeship is designed to develop highly skilled practitioners who demonstrate competence across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice - clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research.

The NRC has developed a bespoke ACP role for rehabilitation which will support the acute care skills team in the centre. The first and second cohorts are already in training. The first course began in January 2023, and the second cohort commenced their course in January 2024. This is a 3-year course MSc.
