Advanced Clinical Practitioner
These roles are suitable for colleagues with a background in nursing or as an allied health professional (AHPs). They will be responsible for looking after the patients from a medical perspective, which will be especially important when we begin accepting more seriously unwell patients to the NRC at an earlier stage of their rehabilitation journey.
Nurses and Healthcare Assistants
There will be a variety of roles available for nurses and healthcare assistants at the NRC to support patients during their rehabilitation journey. To enable colleagues to develop as recognised Professional Rehabilitation Nurses, specific competencies will be supported through courses and training sessions developed at the NRC.
Rehabilitation Consultants
Rehabilitation Consultants can be consultants from any speciality with an interest in rehabilitation medicine and transforming outcomes for patients who have experienced major trauma or serious illness. They will be responsible for helping to shape rehabilitation services locally and nationally as part of the NRC.
Allied Health Professionals
There will be a range of AHP roles based at the NRC including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, and dietitians. There will also be a position for an innovation lead, and several highly-specialised therapist roles.
Occupational Therapist – Mental Health
Patients attending the NRC will likely have some level of emotional distress when they arrive. To enable us to provide the support they need, we will have a specific role of a Mental Health Occupational Therapist who will support the psychology team and provide additional support to promote the emotional wellbeing of our patients.
Rehabilitation Assistant Practitioners
The role of the Rehab Assistant Practitioner will work across Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing, bringing therapy into every interaction with patients and embedding the 24-hour rehab model to improve patient outcomes and in-line with international best practice.
A new Rehabilitation Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship has been launched at Birmingham City University to help people begin a career in rehabilitation.
Psychology Assistant
Psychology Assistants will support Psychologists by working with patients to practice prescribed exercises, strategies and cognitive training, and repeat patient assessments. This role is ideal for psychology graduates looking to pursue a career in clinical psychology.
Speech and Language Therapy Assistant
This role will support patient with their speech and language rehabilitation to improve speech or swallowing, and will also lead patient communication groups at the NRC.
Case manager
This is a new role for the rehabilitation setting. The case manager will be someone with a nursing or AHP background who will act as a key worker or patient advocate. They will help patients and their families with the transition from acute clinical care to rehabilitation and through to discharge.
Pharmacists and Pharmacist Technician
These roles will help to ensure patients get the right medicines and in a timely manner, especially as the NRC is on a different site to the main NUH hospitals.
Orthotist
This role will spend some time at the NRC fitting splints and casts, and making bespoke splints for patients as required.
Healthcare scientist
A healthcare scientist will be employed at the NRC to manage the more high-tech equipment during patient assessment and review, including the CAREN – the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment.
Clerical roles
In addition to the clinical roles above, there will be a range of clerical positions at the NRC to ensure the centre runs smoothly, including housekeepers, PAs, receptionists, and a clerical data analyst and scheduler.
