The NRC: Building

NRC main shot

The NRC building brings together patient care, research, and training and education under one roof.

Combining high-quality design with bespoke treatment facilities, this 70-bed specialist clinical building set in acres of parkland contributes directly to patient wellbeing. It has been designed and constructed to achieve the highest standards of sustainability, performance and energy efficiency.

The NRC is located on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate (SHRE) between Nottingham and Loughborough, 400m away from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC).

This video demonstrates where the building is and a flythrough of the rendered architecture images:

Construction of the NRC began in Autumn 2023, and the final work being done to the building is due to conclude early in 2026 to enable our patients to move in.

This timelapse shows the construction process from a green field on the SHRE estate to the magnificent building it is today.

The first operationally carbon neutral NHS building

The NRC will be the first operational carbon neutral building in the NHS, driving forward the health service’s climate commitment as it aims to reach net zero by 2040.

The NRC has been designed to a new standard of energy efficiency for the NHS. It is all-electric, features three air source heat pumps (ASHPs), and 900m2 of solar panels that are predicted to provide 10% of the building’s energy needs. Through these energy savings, and by producing much of its own power, the building is expected to make significant savings on energy costs, adding value to the NHS.
