The very first patient has arrived through the doors of the country’s first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) and is celebrating an extra special day as it is also his 37th birthday.
The NRC is a 70-bed, state-of-the-art specialist rehabilitation centre for NHS patients who have experienced a life-changing illness or injury, is run and staffed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), and has opened to patients today, Wednesday 2 September.
Neil Smith, a self-employed builder from Milford, Derbyshire, was first through the doors of the pioneering centre, and was welcomed by members of NUH’s Trust Board and other senior colleagues.

The country’s first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) has announced a major new collaboration with British Cycling and cycle manufacturer ICE Trikes, designed to enable patients with life-changing illness and injuries to discover a new sport and benefit their recovery journey.
As part of the collaboration, ICE Trikes has gifted three hand‑cycles and three adaptive trikes exclusively for patient use at the NRC. In addition, a dedicated British Cycling Rehabilitation Coach will be based at the centre, funded by the Peter Harrison Foundation and with the support of Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Recruitment to this newly created role will begin in the near future.
More than 80 colleagues from the neighbouring Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) were welcomed to the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) this week for a series of guided tours, giving them the opportunity to see the new facility ahead of the arrival of its first patients next week.
In total, 83 DMRC staff members took part in the tours, alongside 11 members of the DMRC executive team who visited earlier in the day.
